Hoffmann & Baron LLP Welcomes Joseph W. Ricigliano, JD, Ph.D.

Hoffmann & Baron, LLP is pleased to announce that Joseph W. Ricigliano, JD, Ph.D., has joined the firm as a Partner on June 14, 2021; Joe will be responsible for opening and running Hoffmann & Baron’s new Virginia/Washington, D.C. regional office, which will join our offices in New York (Long Island) and New Jersey (Parsippany).

Joe has a very diverse and deep background in Intellectual Property.  His Patent practice focuses on patent counseling, portfolio management, and strategy assessment. He has previously examined, prosecuted and counseled clients in the biological/biomedical, pharmaceutical, chemical, and materials science areas. He is experienced with intellectual property in a variety of areas including the pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical area (including the use of antibodies and other proteins for the modulation of the immune system and the delivery of drugs) and with intellectual property related to the associated technologies.  He has also worked with a diverse set of chemical applications including nanomaterials, nanocomposites, electroplating and electrodeposition, specialty coatings (including hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings), and with chemical diversity (e.g., combinatorial material technologies and biological diversity technologies). In addition, Joe also has substantial prosecution and counseling experience in the agriculture space, including plant variety protection and agriculture utility patents.

In his practice, Joe has prepared and prosecuted both U.S. and foreign patent applications, working with scientists and in-house counsel to identify patentable subject matter and to secure protection. He has advised pharmaceutical industry and clinical laboratory clients on compliance with the Clinical Laboratory Improvements Acts (CLIA). In addition, he has conducted investigations and advised clients on matters related to CLIA noncompliance issues and events. Joe has also prepared numerous briefs for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board and has successfully managed opposition proceedings in other countries.

Joe attended Rutgers University for his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry (1982) and then went on to earn his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Pennsylvania (1989).  After a career as a laboratory scientist focused on rational-based drug design (including as a founding senior scientist at Paradigm Biosciences), Joe earned his law degree from the American University Washington College of Law (2005).  Joe is admitted to the District of Columbia Bar and the Virginia Bar, and he is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
